Laptops, Luggage & Leashes: Croatia

I had another opportunity to visit Wayne when he went to port in Croatia since it coincided with a break between my house sits. With my new job about to start in mid-November, I was able to take a break from my contract as well but would work one late night while overseas. I booked my flight and flew to Split, Croatia. Thirty-seven hours of travel later, I checked into our hotel room and tried to see what it would be like to work US hours in Europe. My plan didn't go well at all. I wasn't able to sleep on any of the flights on the way over, so my efforts to stay up and work until 1 a.m. were not fruitful. Note for the future to give myself a day to adjust to the time change before trying to be productive.

Croatia was incredible! The people were very hospitable and helpful, because we didn't speak the language at all and most places didn't also have English provided. It also made it a more exotic experience and truly felt like a foreign experience.

We wandered around Split the first night, had a nice dinner, went to the Game of Throwns museum and enjoyed the shops in Split. The architecture is ominous and breathtaking, which is obviously why they filmed so much of that series in the country. The next day we took a bus to Dubrovnik and stayed in Old Town (aka King's Landing for the GOT fans.) We stayed in Old Town, which is surrounded by the large stone wall, which you can walk along the top of and see all the city has to offer. I was hoping to take a dip in the Meditteranean, but the seas were too angry to make it safe. We took the gondola to the top and saw all the sites before spending the night in a lovely boutique hotel in Old Town. We returned to Split and headed up to Klis Fortress above the town. This was the setting for Mareen in the series, and a really neat old military fortress that is still in use. It was insanely windy and cold, but really special to see at night. We ended the trip by visiting the dragon's lair (of course) and having a lovely dinner. Highly recommend seeing this beautiful country.
